How we got there...

While other companies attempt to find the right influencers based on vanity metrics and categorisation (eg: Women with more than 200k followers), here at Audiense we analyze trends within audiences to understand who influences them directly and indirectly.

Identifying the right Audience : Before making any assumptions, we need to understand the audience we’re looking to analyse. This begins with an accurate identification of audiences fitting a specific criteria or individuals participating in a particular conversation.

Understanding the Audience: Once we have identified the right audience, we can begin to uncover trends in their public activity, such as the content they share, what they like, who they follow etc. From this data, we gather intelligence into their demographics, interests, consumer preferences and personalities to help us build a clear picture of who they are. This information ensures that we are analysing the correct segment enabling us to extract the most relevant influencers.

What to consider when identifying influencers:

  • The Rankings: How to establish an influencer hierarchy
When establishing influencer rankings the primary factor used is the affinity of an audience to an influencer. Once a ranking based on affinity is established it is cross-referenced with the uniqueness of the influencer across social media.
  • Understanding the types of Influencers
In our methodology, once a ranking of influencers is established it is essential to differentiate between the type of influencer:
    • Macro-influencers: Are the "celebrity" type. They usually have a user base of more than a million individuals along with a significant Follower/Following ratio. They don’t necessarily share content very often, but if they do they are able to trigger a viral tsunami.
    • Micro-influencers: Are usually authorities on specific topics, with a following that is unique to their niche. Depending on the use case, these influencers tend to have an audience of several thousands individuals, although this may vary.
    • Conversational influencers: When the audience we are analyzing is built around a conversation, there are certain people that direct the discussion, macro or micro in nature. It is those individuals directing the conversation that we identify as conversational influencers.
